Shudokan
Gasshuku 2026

Shudokan Summer Training
August 7-9, 2026

August 7th - 9th

In 2026, the Shudokan Gasshuku will be dedicated to an extraordinary and rarely taught kata: Shichisei Saho – also known as Bung Bo / Beng Bu, a classic form from the Seven Star Praying Mantis tradition.

In addition, we will also train in Kobudo and study a kata of Okinawan weapons arts: the Oshiro no Tenryu .

Praying Mantis
7-Star Kung Fu

This Shichisei Saho, handed down by Ichikawa Isao Hanshi, represents a fascinating bridge between traditional Okinawan karate and Chinese martial arts. Within his Karatedo, it occupies a special position: as an expression of profound principles and as a living link between Okinawan roots and Chinese influences.

As one of Toyama Kanken's most important students, Ichikawa Hanshi carefully preserved this valuable knowledge and passed it on to future generations.

The form is characterized by powerful, rhythmically structured footwork and flowing yet penetrating hand techniques. Beyond its technical diversity, it conveys essential principles such as strategy, posture, and timing – qualities that are of central importance in both traditional Karate-do and classical Chinese systems.

The Bo-Kata Oshiro no Tenryu is considered a true gem of Kobudō. Today it is only taught in a few lineages and has been lost in many schools.

This kata was learned by Toyama Kanken from Oshiro Chojo and passed on at the Shudokan Dojo. Oshiro Chojo (1887–1935) was a prominent master of Okinawan Kobudo from Shuri and an outstanding representative of Yamane-ryu Bojutsu; as a student of Chinen Sanda, he significantly shaped this tradition and influenced numerous subsequent generations with his teaching.

Their instruction within the framework of this Gasshuku offers a rare opportunity to learn about and practice an authentic piece of Okinawan weaponry.
